Ghosts, trolls and sorcerers

To Icelanders the Strandir region is wrapped in an aura of mystery. According to lore it's not only home to ghosts, elves and trolls, but many thought witchcraft was rampant here, used for both good and evil.
Hotel Laugarholl is a peaceful and comfortable family-run country hotel located in the green and sparsely populated valley Bjarnarfjordur, perfectly situated for exploring the remote and beautiful wilderness of mysterious Strandir.

We have single, double and triple rooms with private or shared facilities, a cosy living room with free internet access and a restaurant with special emphasis on fresh and tasty homemade local food as well as global cuisine.

Next to the hotel you will find The Pool of Gvendur the good, a naturally warm geothermal outdoor swimming pool (32°C) and adjacent natural hot pool (42°C), perfect for relaxing after a long day on the road or hiking in the wilderness.

The camping site is open from 1. June - 1. September

The swimming pool in Reykhólar is named Grettislaug named after Grettir the Strong.

Alongside the pool there is a campsite that is opened during summer.

Unlike many swimming pools in the region, Krossneslaug is heated by natural hot-springs; the rareness of such features in the Westfjords is due to the fact that this is the oldest part of the country, thus the least affected by the volcanic rift valley that runs through the centre of Iceland. At Krossneslaug, therefore, it is possible to embrace this
unique aspect of Icelandic culture and nature more authentically than you would at many other locations in the region.

It is considered an 'Infinity Pool' due to the fact it has magnificent views of the ocean, with nothing impeding the view between the two waters. Looking out towards north Iceland, this makes Krossneslaug a fantastic place to spot some of the country's unique wildlife.

Whales are occasionally seen breaking the surface and raising their flukes, most commonly Humpback Whales, and the area is inhabited by many seabirds and seals. You also have a slight chance to see dolphins.

Located in the tiny settlement of Krossnes, Krossneslaug is a fair distance from any major civilisation. The nearest villages of significance, Hólmavík and Drangsnes, are both over 100 kilometres away, requiring more than two hours of driving. Árneshreppur is much closer, but a hamlet of just 53 people with few amenities.

Ísafjörður swimming pool is the oldest pool in town, a 16-metre indoor pool built immediately after the Second World War. By the pool there is one hot tub and a cold tub.

In the same building there is a small gymnasium, but the main gymnasium of Ísafjörður is on Torfnes.

Suðureyrlaug is the municipality's only outdoor pool. There is a swimming pool (17 m), two tubs, a wading pool, a gym and an integrated gymnasium that connects the swimming pool and the primary school.

Welcome to Þingeyri

Camping ground open the whole year.

The swimming pool at Drangsnes is a very pleasant and comfortable outdoor pool. The pool was built in 2005 and is 12.5 meters long. Next to the pool there is a hot tub where you can switch on massages, one paddling pool and a steam room.

The view from the swimming pool is unique, where you can see Grímsey island in Steingrímsfjörður. It is the largest island on the Strandir and is a true nature treasure.

Hotel Heydalur is located in the beautiful valley of Heydalur, around 320 km from Reykjavík and 130 km from Ísafjörður. The hotel offers 59 beds in 19 rooms (all with private WC) as well as three summer cottages.

The hotel restaurant is renowned for its delicious, local food which is served in the old barn.

The hotel also operates a campsite (open from June 1 until the end of October) with warm showers, flushing toilets and ample electricity plugs for RVs and trailers.

Heydalur has recently been nominated as the best bathing site in the Westfjords area. Near the hotel you will find two outdoor, geothermal hot tubs, as well as a small pool inside a tropical greenhouse. On the other side of the river Heydalsá you will find yet another natural hot tub.

The opportunities for recreation and activities are almost endless. The hotel has a playground for children and youth, but also offers guided kayaking and horse riding tours that are suitable for most people. There are numerous hiking routes available, birdwatching is excellent during summer and freshwater fishing is also possible. During winter, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and, of course, the magic of the northern lights.

The golf club in Bíldudalur was formed in 1992, since then club memeber have built up a wonderful 9 hole course at Litlueyrarvöllur. The course is nicely sheltered from the wind by surrounding mountains and a nice view out the fjord.

Gláma golf club's home course is at Meðaldalsvöllur in Dýrafjörður. It is about 5 km drive out the fjord from the village of Þingeyri. Meðaldalsvöllur's surroundings are exceptional, great variety in the landscape and all sorts of hazards to get through, such as the dam on 7th hole.

The course has 9 holes and is a par 72 (when playing 18 holes).

The golf course in Bolungarvík is called Syðridalsvöllur. It has 9 holes but 18 tees, giving you a different view of the hole when playing the course twice. How it all started
Vilborg Arnarsdóttir (Bogga in Súðavík) created this garden. She has had a long standing dream of creating a playground for children, families and guests visiting the Westfjords in the summer. Her intention was to encourage quality time for children to share with their parents by enabling out door activities and excercise in a dedicated area. She started serious work on the project after she lost her son, Ragnar Freyr Vestfjörð, who died in a car crash in Súðavík in 2001, only 17 years old. The garden is dedicated to his memory.

The dream came true with the help of local people, summer guests, numerous supporters of all ages and several sponsors. All those people have volunteered with dedication and loving care contributing several thousand hours of work to the garden. The garden has received many generous gifts through the years and funds have been raised using various methods. During the 11 years of its existance four tons of ´kleinur´ (Icelandic twisted doughnuts) have been baked and sold in support of the garden, children have organized lotteries and given all the income to the garden. The Association of Sheep Shepherds in Ísafjarðardjúp have supported the garden in many ways, concerts in support of the garden have been organized etc.

The construction work
The "Raggagarður Society" was founded on January 8th 2004 to manage the design and construction of the garden. On the board of directors for the first 11 years (2004-2015) were: Vilborg Arnarsdóttir chair, Barði Ingibjartsson, Sigurdís Samúelsdóttir, Anne Berit Vikse og Jónas Ágústsson. The work started on May 14th 2004 and the playground opened on August 6th 2005. The garden has two play areas, the upper area is for older children and the lower area for the youngest. In the fall of 2013 the work on the recreational part of the garden commenced and three storage huts were built. Themes inspired by the Westfjords distinct character have been used in the garden's designs and artwork made of local material decorates the garden. The recreational area was formally opened on August 8th 2015.

The facilities
The recreational area has a stage with public seating for arts and cultural events and large family gatherings. There are facilities for barbecue on several locations and tables and chairs for more than 100 people inside the garden.

The guestbook and collection box are situated next to the lavatories and we kindly ask guests to sign their names in the book whenever the visit the garden. There is no admission fee for Raggagarður but contributions to the collection box are greatfully accepted. The money collected will be used for the upkeep and operational costs of the garden.

WC, BBQ and other facilities are open from June 1 to September 1. Nevertheless, you are welcome to visit the garden during other seasons as well.

The garden is made with the minds, hearts and hands of local people and their supporters. Many thanks to you all who made this project come true.
